Smith River

We offer guided floats and guided walk & wade trips on the Smith.

History - The Smith River emits the coldest water of Virginia's tailwaters and offers excellent trout fishing. It is the second oldest trout tailwater in the state. The browns in the Smith are wild and the rainbows and brook trout are stocked. Construction on Philpot Dam, from which the Smith River tailwater flows, began in 1948 and was completed in 1953. Trout were stocked the next year with reproduction detected soon thereafter.

We have fished the river since before the shop was founded in 1998 and have guided it since 2022. Our founder, Doug Lane, learned about the river from relatives in the greater Henry County area of Martinsville & Bassett from his mother who grew up in Bassett and told stories about floods there before Philpot Dam was constucted. Over the past five years our guides have researched the Smith aggressively and have unlocked many of its secrets.
