Our Guides

Founded in 1998 to serve fly fishermen, reel ladies, and outdoor clothing enthusiasts, Anglers Lane can guide you on Virginia's varied and underpublicized waters. We guide clients from beginner to expert. While we take our fishing seriously, we try not to take ourselves too seriously. "In the eyes of fish all men are equal" once said Billy Westmoreland, a Tennessee guide. Meet some of the cast of characters guiding for us...

Luke Barton

Luke's passion for fishing is surpassed only by his desire to put you on fish. Terrific oarsman with a great sense of fish behavior across the board-trout, smallmouth and musky. Knows the James, the Jackson and the Smith well. Grew up in Western NC where he has fished extensively. Excellent fly tyer especially streamers. Can keep up with the best of those who talk sports--espeically baseball--and classic rock. When owner Doug (below) has a day off, Luke is his go-to guide, if Luke's not working on building his house.

Doug Lane

Founded Anglers Lane in 1998 after 20 years in furniture industry. Earliest memories include mornings on the banks of the Staunton River (late 1960's). Enjoys the Jackson, Staunton, and Rivenridge at Piney River Forks, Quebec (Atlantic Salmon), & Missoula MT. Has logged more hours guiding on the Staunton and Jackson Rivers than any living guide on these rivers; also keeps up with water flows and regulations of both. Learned from the late, inimitable Chuck Kraft, first full-time freshwater fishing guide in Virginia and founder of the Kreelex, Clawdad and numerous effective flies. Later studied two-handed Spey casting under Simon Gawesworth. Ties own streamers and many nymphs. Still learning after all these years.

Adam Godsey

Excellent fisherman and empathetic guide with solid knowledge of our area's waters as well as fish behavior. Adam knows brookie waters around this region like back of his hand as well as other wild trout habitat. Our go-to guide for euro nymph fishing. Outstanding sense of how to catch trout in low water conditions. Excellent fly tyer especially nymnphs. Accomplished with smallmouth and trout. Extremely patient. Loves to talk fishing with anyone of any age. Knows a great deal about cars and construction.

Tanner Conkright

Tanner has pursued trout with a flyrod for nearly a decade. From Pennsylvania to Western North Carolina, he has explored countless trout streams throughout the Appalachian region. Native of Central Virginia. Grew up on a bass lake. Extremely broad knowledge of Virginia trout fisheries. Specializes in euro nymphing and swinging wet flies among other tactics. While progressing as an angler himself, Tanner truly enjoys teaching and guiding others on the river, from beginners to more experienced anglers, while helping the client catch fish and enjoy a good day on the water.

A J Raymond

AJ has been attacking the Smith and the James with great energy since starting with us two years ago. Has fished the Florida coast, Montana and other venues. Has a very kind manner and is excellent with clients requiring the most patience. Soaking up knowledge about area rivers at a rapid pace.

Jonathan Krause

Competed on Liberty University's college bass fishing team for 4 years fishing across US. Has fly fished since early childhood. Combines experience of fly fishing with knowledge of fish movement & behavior learned at collegiate level competition to provide educational experience to people of all ages. Really knows bass behavior patterns and loves sharing his knowledge with clients. Solid person with incredible patience.
